The s5 is the latest variant of the Terrex family and was unveiled to the media in the days leading up to the show by ST Engineering’s Chairman of the Singapore Airshow 2024 Steering Committee Chua Jin Kiat.
This new member of the Terrex family is an 8×8 wheeled IFV which offers a hybrid electric drive (HED) as an option, advanced vehicle electronics (vetronics) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as an increased payload compared with the current Terrex 3.
The company says the s5 is ready for production and is “fully-integrated with the most powerful engine, alternator and battery system in the family to date”.
“More and more of our future solutions will have AI in them,” Chua said, citing the focus ST Engineering is placing on digital and ‘smart’ systems.
ST Engineering brochure figures for the S5 indicate a length of 8.3 metres, a width of 3m and a height of 2.7m without weapons. The gross weight is 37 tonnes, with a payload of 13 tonnes, and the vehicle is capable of accommodating two crew and ten troops.
The 711 hp turbo-diesel engine allows the vehicle to reach 120 km/hr and the maximum range is reported to be 1,000 km.
The optional hybrid powerplant is a Range Extender with Li Ion battery, providing a power output of 1,200 hp and a ‘silent’ range of 50 km.
“This will be the world’s first 35-tonne HED armoured fighting vehicle, the Terrex s5 has been designed from the ground up as a digital platform,” Chua said.
While he declined to reveal whether the vehicle has been developed in response to the requirements of Singapore’s Ministry of Defence – or give specific details of potential customers – he did provide an overview of where ST Engineering sees a market.
“We do see that there will be markets out there, but the 8×8 space is very competitive, but I don’t know any that’s as smart and as survivable as this one – and it’s not necessarily at the price that you would think you would have to pay for something so smart,” he explained.
“In terms of markets of interest; Europe (and) the Middle East.”
ST Engineering was by far the biggest exhibitor and Singapore 2024, in terms of both stand space and capabilities on show.
