A walk around Sydney will have you spotting a variety of architectural styles, from traditional inner-city Victorian terraces to slick modern mansions overlooking the water.
While some design trends have a short time in the sun, others are age-old classics that never go out of style.
Top custom builder New South Homes knows what people want when it comes to designing their dream home. Here are the sought-after styles they’re seeing right now.
New South Homes design and approvals manager Wally Gebrael says their designs range from architectural pre-designed floorplans to unique, custom home designs with luxury inclusions.
Some things never go out of style, including timeliness and style forward designs.
But among that span of styles is a pattern of trends he expects to see well into the new year.
“There are definitely some stand-out styles we can see are trending from what our clients are asking for which I think will extend through to 2024,” Gebrael says.
“We do a lot of custom design, so often customers come to us telling us what they want already, which is great.
“In the sense that it makes it a little bit easier because we know the style they like and what they're trying to achieve.”
With its origins dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, this French country style is defined by rustic wood, exposed beams and wrought-iron accents.
The trend was adapted by French citizens who were trying to replicate the opulence of royal style within their own homes.
Adopted from France, elegance and longevity are the key factors of this style.
Gebrael said New South Homes’ clients across Sydney often request French Provincial style for its timeless and elegant appeal.
“On the North Shore and in the eastern suburbs and there's a large number of French Provincial homes being built, so I think that the style will get more and more exposure which makes other people want it,” he explains.
“I’ve been in the design industry for more than 30 years and I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go, but French Provincial has remained popular.
“I understand why. It’s a classic look.”
The Hamptons style originated in the eastern end of Long Island where affluent New Yorkers would flock to the beach when the weather warmed up.
Designed with a low-maintenance lifestyle in mind, this chic style is ideal for beachside living. Hallmarks include weatherboard exterior cladding, large windows, light airy colour palettes and US Shaker-style kitchens, which are known for quality craftsmanship, clean lines, symmetrical cabinetry and framed panel doors.
Gebrael says Hamptons style is particularly popular in the Northern Beaches of Sydney – an area not unlike the Hamptons of Long Island.
Light hues, breezy style features and openness are features of the Hampton style.
“It’s a style that really suits the area because it’s next to the beach – clients want something low-maintenance but also that fits in with the surrounding landscape,” he said.
“We use very light colours and cladding – it's a lightweight construction with beautiful timber balconies out the front.
“Sydneysiders really love this style because it suits the lifestyle here.”
The term ‘traditional’ has morphed into several different iterations over the years, including terrace houses in the inner-city and the red-brick homes of the suburbs.
However, Gebrael says there are a few defining features that comprise the traditional style.
“Traditional would be predominantly brick exteriors with gable, terracotta roofs and solid timber doors, all combined to give the home a heritage feel.”
Gebrael says the style remains popular with Sydneysiders, drawn to its cosy yet enduring presence – ideal for family living.
