Operation Army arrived in Rockhampton to give local school students valuable insights into the diverse range of career opportunities in the ADF.
Soldiers from 31st/42nd Battalion, the Royal Queensland Regiment, 11th Engineering Regiment and 11th Combat Support Service Battalion gave students a hands-on experience of life in uniform, including a tour around Support Base Rockhampton in an Australian Army G-Wagon.
Students participated in a pre-fitness assessment, practice radio communication procedures and navigation activities.
They learnt about some of the many Army capabilities and jobs in military engineering and combat support.
Defence Work Experience Regional Manager Nel Archer said the program let students know about Defence jobs.
“Many students from areas outside our larger centres are simply not aware of the huge range of jobs and careers available in the ADF,” Ms Archer said.
“For example, students who aren’t exposed to the military may not know they can complete a trade qualification through the ADF, while students considering university degrees also have options for Defence university sponsorship.”
The Operation Army series is being rolled out across North Queensland, particularly regional areas.
Ms Archer said taking the demonstrations to the students made an impact in remote areas.
“It’s aimed at supporting students in regional and remote locations who may not have the financial or family support to travel to our bigger centres such as Townsville and Cairns,” Ms Archer said.
“We want to excite and empower young people with the information they need to make smart decisions about their futures and the job opportunities that exist in the ADF.”
Opportunities are available for secondary and tertiary students.
Participants must be at least 15 at the time of the placement.

The Jezzine Barracks open day encouraged soldiers to reflect on their own enlistment journeys to help inspire future recruits.
Culture and colour filled the air in Wewak, Papua New Guinea, as the community celebrated 48 years of independence.
Defence support service providers and organisations took part in the second annual HMAS Watson Members and Family Day in Sydney.
