Dozens of sinkholes have appeared in the rural Hunter Valley community of Broke in the aftermath of flooding rains.
Residents have told the ABC there are at least 30 sinkholes, also called erosion holes.
So, how do these sinkholes form? Are they always there under the surface ready to collapse at anytime or is just a result of the extreme wet weather?
Paul Turton spoke with Dr Stephen Fityus an expert in the industry and a former professor in geotechnical engineering. He provided his insights.
