Grammy nominees include Australian artists Kylie Minogue, Troye Sivan and Dom Dolla
The nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards have been announced.
They're run by a US-based organisation, so the majority of nominees are typically American.
For Australian artists to get a look in for awards — particularly in the pop, rock and RnB fields — they generally need to have had major commercial success in the US.
This year well-known Australian artists including Kylie Minogue, Troye Sivan and Dom Dolla are up for awards.
Minogue and Sivan are both up for the Best Pop Dance Recording award for their respective songs Padam Padam and Rush
Melbourne's Dom Dolla is up for the Best Remixed Recording for his song New Gold, which features fellow Australian artist Tame Impala.
It's Sivan and Dom Dolla's first Grammy nomination, while it's Minogue's sixth nomination.
She won a Best Dance Recording Grammy for her 2001 song Come into My World.
Her previous other nominations were for Love at First Sight, Slow and I Believe in You.
The ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 4 in Los Angeles, US.
But at that time, it'll be the morning of Monday, February 5 in Australia.
Voting members of an organisation called the Recording Academy.
But not anyone can join, with the Recording Academy saying voter membership is only for:
Members have to be invited to join, which requires two "strong recommendations from music industry peers".
The academy doesn't accept self-recommendations.
Then the potential member has to tell the academy more about their career.
The Recording Academy then either approves or rejects a membership application "at its sole discretion based on its assessment of the submission".
The recording with the most votes in a category wins.
And, yes, ties can happen — so it's possible both Sivan and Minogue win the Best Pop Dance Recording award.
First off, recordings must have been released between October 1, 2022 and September 15, 2023.
And they have to actually be submitted for consideration by the academy by voting or professional members of the Recording Academy as well as "registered media companies".
There are actually 94 categories, broken up into 12 different fields.
The major awards are in what's called the General Field — so let's start with those.
