If you are a small (1-19 people) or medium (20-199 people) sized company in Victoria and/or South Australia’s defence industry, government grants to help you recruit, train, and retain undergraduate students into your business are available in 2024.
The Victorian Defence Industry Scholarship (VDIS), funded by the Defence Science Institute, offers SMEs in Victoria’s defence industry $4,500 for every undergraduate higher education student your company hosts for a semester-long, unpaid internship in 2024.
Eligible students must be an Australian citizen, and enrolled in a science, engineering, technology or mathematics degree in an Australian university in Victoria. Students in their final year of their degree will be brought into your workplace to undertake unpaid, workplace learning and help bridge any skills gaps and shortages you might have. The program will provide each eligible student a $4,500 scholarship for undertaking a placement with your company.

The South Australian Defence Industry Scholarship Program (DISP), funded by Defence SA, offers companies of all sizes in South Australia’s defence industry to host undergraduate higher education students for a semester-long, unpaid internship in 2024. Small-sized companies can receive $4,500 per student you host, while medium-sized companies can receive a $2,500 grant for each student placed.
Eligible students must be an Australian citizen residing in South Australia, and enrolled in a science, technology, engineering, maths or business degree in one of South Australia’s three universities: Flinders, Adelaide, and UniSA. Students in their final year of their undergraduate degree, or completing a postgraduate Honours or Masters degree, are eligible to receive a scholarship of $8,000 if they are placed with a SME or $10,000 if hosted by a Defence Prime or large company.
