Construction at Acciona’s MacIntyre wind precinct is progressing, with the first concrete poured for the 180 foundations that will support the project’s onshore wind turbines in Queensland, Australia.
Spanish developer Acciona began construction at the MacIntyre complex three months ago through its contractor Acciona Construction Australia. Following the earthworks and ground preparation, the first concrete pour has taken place for the wind turbine foundations.
When completed, the 180 turbines will generate 1,026MW of renewable electricity, enough to power 700,000 homes. The wind precinct is located approximately 50km south west of Warwick and 10km south of Karara in Queensland. The complex will comprise two wind farms, the 923MW MacIntyre and the 103MW Karara.
Acciona Energía managing director Brett Wickham said construction was proceeding at full steam creating nearly 700 jobs and supporting hundreds of local businesses in the process.
The A$2bn (£1.2bn) project is thus expected to procure A$500M (£292M) in work from Queensland businesses.
The MacIntyre wind farm precinct will be Acciona’s biggest renewable energy facility and also one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world.
Queensland minister for energy, renewables and hydrogen, Mick de Brenni, said: “After breaking ground on what is the largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere, the pouring of the first tower foundation is more proof that renewable energy equals more jobs in regional Queensland.”
Acciona’s green energy subsidiary Acciona Energía reached an agreement with Clean Co, the Queensland Government’s newest renewable energy generator, for it to become the independent owner and operator of the Karara wind farm. In addition, Clean Co will acquire the annual production of 400MW from Acciona Energía’s facilities for ten years through a power purchase agreement.
Acciona Energía will build and operate the MacIntyre wind farm, developing it in partnership with Ark Energy Corporation, a subsidiary of Korea Zinc.
The wind farm complex is expected to be operational in 2024.
