The Property Council of Australia’s Innovation and Excellence Awards were held in Sydney last night, with the top gong going to Brookfield Place Sydney.
“The Innovation & Excellence Awards spotlight iconic achievements across the industry that shapes Australian cities for the best,” said Property Council chief executive, Mike Zorbas.
Located near Wynyard Station in Sydney, the $2 billion development also took out awards for Best Mixed Use Development, Best Office Development, and Award for Development Innovation.
“Brookfield Place stands tallest in this year’s extraordinary field as an innovative mixed-use project reinvigorating the heart of the Sydney CBD,” said Zorbas.
“I love it. This development shines across every facet of planning, design, building, transport and heritage considerations and delivery, allowing you to leave the practicalities of Wynyard station into a light-filled precinct that is elegant, attractive and warm.”

The development sits on a 4,454 sqm plot and amalgamated five individual properties situated on Carrington and George Streets. It introduced 69,000 sqm of office space and 6,000 sqm of retail area, encompassing flagship stores along George Street and two distinct concourse levels.
While paying homage to the site’s rich historical context, Brookfield Place seamlessly harmonised the old and new through the restoration of 285 George Street and Shell House, with the latter boasting one of the tallest preserved heritage facades in the Southern Hemisphere.
“In the heart of Sydney we have achieved a rejuvenated arrival experience for hundreds of thousands of daily rail commuters, while delivering a best in class office tower, the preservation of two heritage buildings and the addition of some of Sydney’s most in-demand F&B retailers,” said president of Brookfield Properties Australia, Danny Poljak.
“Projects like these take a massive effort by many to realise and we extend our sincerest thanks to the thousands of people who worked on this project directly and indirectly, and to our teams and contractors who currently manage and operate this fantastic asset.”
The construction of a 27-storey premium-grade office tower directly over an active rail station concourse required innovative architectural design and pioneering construction techniques.
“Brookfield Properties has made a significant contribution to the Sydney CBD, delivering a large-scale project that is befitting of a global city,” said RLB managing director, Stephen Mee.
“The development sets a new benchmark for transport-oriented developments and RLB was proud to have provided cost management and quantity surveying services for the project,” he said.
Camille Jasson from the APP Group was awarded Future Leader of the Year.
Fraser Property was awarded the Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (more than 250 employees).
Landcom won the Award for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (less than 250 employees).
