Alex Grima is a 22-year-old Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering student.
Alex recalls hearing about the University’s Solar Car team back from a teacher in high school. After eagerly learning more during the University’s Open Day, Alex knew he had to be a part of it.
Now in his fourth year on the team, Alex has seen the team evolve and is excited for this next chapter.
“As time has gone on, especially in the 2023 race cycle, the team has become more intertwined, and it has become like a family.”
“We have learned and developed skills together and personally I have been able to develop myself to a greater extent because of my close relationship with my peers.”
Alex is the suspension lead and has been heavily involved in the manufacturing of this year’s vehicle, something that has been a passion since an early age.
“I grew up passionate about classic cars and that drove me to study mechanical engineering.”
“Once I complete my Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering, I am excited to use the skills I have learnt throughout the degree and especially the skills I have learnt in the solar car team to pursue a career as a motorsport engineer.”
Whether it’s joining the solar team or another adventure while at university, Alex recommends students jump in and give it a go.
“You never know until you try. Don’t let your hesitation stop you from making a life changing decision.”
“I had been told I wouldn’t be able to pursue a career in engineering, but I have applied myself and committed 120 per cent.
“Solar car has taught me I can achieve anything I put my mind to.”
