A major train route has been disrupted after a wiring issue forced the line to be halted with afternoon Sydney commuters warned to expect delays.
Sydney trains running on the T1 and T9 lines and between Central and Wynyard ground to a halt on Tuesday afternoon after an ‘overhead wiring’ issue forced engineers to rush to Town Hall Station and urgently fix the problem.
A NSW Transport spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia the issue was resolved after 4pm with trains slowly getting back on track.
The spokeswoman warned travellers to expect delays on these lines, including the T2, T3 and T8 lines as a flow-on effect.
Sydney Trains urgently warned customers of the problem on Tuesday.
‘Allow extra travel time due to urgent overhead wiring repairs at Town Hall,’ a Twitter update said.
‘Stops and platform may change at short notice, check transport apps, information screens and listen for announcements.’
The train delays come on the second day of Sydneysiders being treated to five days of free train trips.
NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet announced last week commuters using the rail network would not be charged from Monday through to Friday this week.
Plans for free travel were negotiated last week during ‘constructive’ meetings with the Rail Trams and Bus Union (RTBU).
RTBU NSW Secretary Alex Claassens said he was pleased the government had agreed to provide free travel on the advice of the union.
The union secretary added it was never the intention of the union to disrupt commuters and that the free week of travel was a ‘good result for everyone’.
‘It’s fantastic that the NSW Government has listened and provided commuters with a week of free travel,’ Mr Claassens said.
‘Now, we need to see that good faith continue into negotiations next week so we can hopefully reach a resolution to this ongoing dispute.
‘All we want is safe trains and fair wages and conditions. It’s incredibly disappointing that it has taken so long to achieve that, but hopefully commonsense will soon prevail and we’ll get the outcome commuters and workers deserve.’
