Celebrating five decades of culture, creativity and Australian architecture, the Sydney Opera House will welcome thousands of visitors to step inside for one weekend – its first open day in eight years.
With a series of free events, the festivities will kick off with Icon, a three-night laser show by Australian audio-visual artist Robin Fox. See the immersive performance from the Opera House as well as dancing off the water from around the harbour.
Throughout the weekend, visitors can wander through the iconic building’s seven performance spaces – including the internationally revered Concert Hall – and get a peek into the behind-the-scenes of the World Heritage-listed venue. There’ll be roving performances by local artists, special exhibits by the Opera House’s resident companies Sydney Symphony Orchestra and Bell Shakespeare and First Nations dance performances by Bangarra Dance Theatre and Mornington Island Dancers as well as Aussie artist John Coburn’s work Curtain of the Sun on display.
As with any good celebration, Opera Bar and House Canteen – the Opera House’s harbourside dining venues – will be putting on a free entry Gold Party from 4pm each day. As the name suggests, there’ll be gold-themed menus, glitzy gold cocktails to sip on and live music performances against the harbour’s scenic background.
The packed weekend is part of the Opera House’s 50th Birthday Festival, a month-long program of music, dance, theatre and art. Highlights include a performance by Aria-nominated singer Emma Donovan (marking her headline Opera House debut); Bark of Millions, a queer rock opera by Taylor Mac at the Concert Hall; artist Megan Cope’s public artwork Whispers and much more.
