MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) — New stormwater capital improvement projects will soon come to the city of Myrtle Beach.
Since 2021, an engineering company has been collecting surveys, gathering data, and ultimately, evaluating the City of Myrtle Beach's current water systems. Now, they're sharing a closer look at what they've been gathering with the community.
Identifying what the city's stormwater and drainage systems can handle, and what needs to be improved is the goal of engineers at WK Dickson.

During his presentation Wednesday morning at the old Train Deport Engineer Tom Murray said, "What type of drainage area do we have? How large is it? Is it commercial, is it residential? Is it industrial?"
The data collection that has been occurring since 2021 is being used to determine the company's recommendations for water system projects across the city with some characteristics of focus including:
Murray said the research will help the city council select a concrete capital improvement project list that will feature a cost-effective blend of drainage systems between the ocean, existing water reserves, and the Intracoastal Waterway.
However, the suggested final project selections aren't being unveiled until city council's November 14 meeting. This announcement left Seagate Village resident Stephen Tinius frustrated.
He said he attended the community presentation because, "Whenever we have severe rain, or even a hurricane that comes through – our streets fil up very quickly because the drainage canals we have can't empty quickly enough, and we're interested in what improvements can be made to those drainage canals to solve our flooding problem?"

Murray said project selection will be done based on factors like timeliness, benefit to overall communities, cost, urgency, and available crews.
Tinius said he hopes Seagate Village will be among the final projects selected.
During the city council's November 14 meeting, a presentation on the study will be given., and a plan will be adopted to formally select and finalize which capital improvement projects the city is moving forward with.
