This leafy riverside retreat may look like it’s tucked away in a rainforest, but it’s only 40 minutes from the Sydney CBD.
Perched on the banks of the Georges River in Lugarno in Sydney’s south, the recently renovated three-bedroom cottage would be perfect for buyers who want to get away from it all but don’t want to leave the city.

The unique home, completely surrounded by bushland, is one of just three houses on that stretch of the river that are built right on the water.
The only other signs of civilisation are a few jetties and boat houses dotted along the shore.

Describing the property in the listing, the owners say living there is "like a perpetual holiday, filled with peaceful, secluded moments amidst nature."
"Our beloved riverside retreat has been the setting for joyous family gatherings, tranquil wildlife spotting, and festive celebrations," they said.

The property features a converted boathouse at the end of a long jetty, which sales agent and Ausrealty partner Imam Sayed said is one of the home’s best features.
"It has one of the longest jetties I’ve ever seen, and I’ve sold hundred of waterfront properties," he said.

"A level yard on the waterfront is extremely difficult to find. The existing structure on the water is unbelievable – you can work from home while you’re fishing."
The house is reached by stairs or an inclinator which provides access to the secure garage at street level.
With amazing views from every room, the waterfront property would make a highly desirable short-term rental, or a secluded family retreat. Picture: realestate.com.au/buy
The property last traded hands in 2017 when it sold for $1.26 million. Since then it’s undergone a renovation, with a new kitchen, bathrooms and a fresh coat of paint.
Mr Sayed said the owners considered leasing the home as a short-term rental, but decided to use it as their family home as it provided the ultimate escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet was still very well connected.

"Sydney is pretty fast paced and people leave or go on holidays to get away from how fast everything is."
"Lugarno is right amongst everything, you’re close to the M5, you’ve got four train stations near you, but when you get there it’s like a retreat."
"It’s one of my favourite suburbs. It was undervalued for a really long time."

The median house price in Lugarno rose 11.3% in the past year to $1.75 million, according to PropTrack.
Riverfront properties in Lugarno rarely change hands. A four-bedroom house at 26 Moons Avenue sold for $2.575 million in January this year, while nearby 104 Moons Avenue sold for $3.7 million in April last year. The house next door at 154 Lugarno Parade sold for $1.38 million in 2020.

However, these homes were built high on the hill rather than down by the water's edge, making this property especially unique, a factor Mr Sayed said had drawn interest from across Sydney and interstate.
