The Australasian Railway Association (ARA) is urging engineering graduates thinking of a career in the rail industry, and those who have recently entered the industry, to consider registering for its comprehensive introductory online course Understanding Rail.
Registrations for the highly interactive five-week course, which is also suitable to those already in the industry wanting to brush up on their knowledge, close on August 25 and the course begins on September 6.
ARA chief executive officer Caroline Wilkie said the Understanding Rail course offered a unique opportunity to gain a thorough understanding of the industry, regardless of job.
“Understanding Rail is an enriching journey that offers insights into the rail industry in Australia and New Zealand. It’s a great opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders and professionals and get a thorough grounding for a career in rail,” she said.
The course covers five modules, including track infrastructure and rolling stock, operations and safety, passenger and freight and contractors and the supply chain.
“The course gives an overview of the rail industry and its terminology as well as covering the industry’s contribution to our economy and community and how current policies, projects and innovation will drive its future,” Wilkie said.
“It also looks at the different types of rail infrastructure and rolling stock, and how to ensure their safe and efficient management across the asset lifecycle.
“Participants will learn about the complexities of safely operating a rail network, and the systems that keep it moving, and gain an understanding of the range of businesses that make up the rail supply chain, and how they work together.
“We have had people at all stages of their career doing this course – from absolute beginners to those who have been in the industry for a number of years but want a deeper understanding of rail.”
The ARA is also holding its second intake of the very popular online five-week Introduction to Rail Signalling course, starting in October.
“Rail signalling is undoubtedly one of the most important aspects of a railway system and this is a great opportunity to get across the essential principles of signalling systems and operations, whether you are a graduate, an engineer involved in such projects, a project manager grappling with new assets and rail operations, or someone considering a career change,” Wilkie said.
The course will cover how to adopt key signalling terminology in the workplace as well as the critical role it plays in safe working systems.
Participants will also learn about the importance of systems integration in the context of lineside and digital signalling systems within a single rail network, including future trends and modern systems.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to read a signalling plan and will have gained an understanding of the principles of digital signalling design.
The course is facilitated by Anutha Director Jane Copperthwaite, who has experience working in both the public and private sectors internationally and in and Australia.
