Sydney's western fringe has traditionally been the stalwart choice for first home buyers looking to get on the property ladder, but some new postcodes have entered the top ten – and they're a lot closer to the CBD.
Just five kilometres from the Sydney CBD, postcode 2017 is a surprise new entrant on the list of most popular areas for first home buyers – sneaking in at number 10.
The inner-city postcode takes in the suburbs of Waterloo and Zetland.
"This postcode has seen a steady and gradual increase month-to-month since the start of the year, with units the most popular type of property purchased," InfoTrack's Head of Property Australia, Lee Bailie, said.
Almost three-quarters of all homes listed in this postcode were within the $500,000 to $1 million price range.
At number nine on the list was postcode 2148, covering Blacktown, Prospect and Kings Park.
The ethnically diverse area offers a mix of quiet residential streets and apartment buildings, providing something both for workers and young families alike.
With a wave of new developments recently completed and more underway, it's no surprise that Parramatta postcode 2150 is one of the most popular for first home buyers.
With a median sale price of $790,000, Campbelltown is another affordable western Sydney suburb for those looking at entering the property market.
Postcode 2560 - taking in Campbelltown, Leumeah and down to Cataract – comes in at number seven.
Another first-time entrant to the top ten, southern Sydney postcode 2205 abutts Sydney Airport and includes the suburbs of Arncliffe and Wolli Creek.
"The growth in interest in this suburb has been quite extraordinary. There were nearly four times the number of sales in the month of June compared to January," Mr Bailie said.
Around 94 per cent of all properties listed in this postcode were within the $500,000 to $1 million price bracket.
At around 11 kilometres from the Sydney CBD, it's an appealing choice for first home buyers looking to stay closer to their place of work.
Until recently postcodes like 2762 on the fringe of Sydney's urban sprawl were dominated by rural and semi-rural properties, but new housing developments such as the one pictured in Schofields are changing the make-up of the area.
The postcode, which takes in Schofields and Tallawang, came in at the mid-point of the top ten most popular NSW suburbs for first home buyers.
New high-rise developments in Liverpool have increased the number of affordable housing options for first-home buyers.
Postcode 2170, which also includes Lurnea, Casula and Moorebank, came in as fourth most popular.
The suburbs of Greystanes, Westmead and Wentworthville continue to be a popular chioce for first home buyers, with the postcode coming in third on the list.
Suburban areas like Kellyville continue to remain popular amongst young families looking to settle down. Postcode 2155, which also includes Rouse Hill and Box Hill, was the second largest volume of people purchase their first home in the past three months.
Despite the new entrants, western Sydney suburbs continue to dominate in popularity amongst first home buyers.
Marsden Park and surrounds was the most popular area amongst first-home buyers in the last quarter, jumping up from third place.
Around 50 kilometres from the Sydney CBD, the area is popular amongst growing families looking for more space.
