Applications are now open for university students to launch their career with Townsville City Council’s graduate program.
Seventeen graduates will have the opportunity to build their career at Council in disciplines like engineering, environmental health, health and safety, and information technology.
Mayor Jenny Hill said Council was one of the city’s largest employers and was always opening pathways to create new jobs and upskill its employees.
“Council is committed to building Townsville into a city of the future, with key industries like engineering, environmental health, law, human resources, information technology, occupational health and safety being at the forefront of future industries,” Cr Hill said.
“Our city is a leading centre for education, training, advanced manufacturing, and research and is home to two major universities. As one of the city’s biggest employers, it’s essential Council harnesses its position to grow Townsville’s capacity and train the professionals of tomorrow so we can continue to innovate for future industries growth.
“Through this program, graduates will be offered industry-specific training, professional development and operational rotations to bring the theory from their degrees into practical on-the-job experience.”
Council Business Services and Finance Committee chairperson Margie Ryder said Council was proud to be named Large Employer of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards in July.
“Our electrical apprentice Benjamin Zabel was named the Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards, which just goes to show how valuable our apprenticeships, traineeships and graduate programs are for up-and-coming professionals,” Cr Ryder said.
“Council is proud to attract and retain local talent. We take on apprentices, trainees and graduates knowing that some of them will stay at Council for many years to come while others will go on to work at or start their own local businesses.
“This flow-on effect from Council’s investment directly benefits Townsville’s economy and helps show young people in Townsville that they can progress their careers right here in the North.”
Applications for Council’s graduate program close on Sunday 17 September 2023. For more information or to apply, head to Career Pathways.
