A buyer has paid almost seven figures for a Sydney home with a huge portion of the ceiling missing.
The three-bedroom, one-bathroom house at 51 Brisbane Road in the suburb of St Johns Park sold at auction on September 2 for $965,000, and has significant damage and a large chunk of the roof absent, creating an open-air kitchen.
Incredible listing photos reveal the extent of destruction – cause unknown, as it is not outlined in the listing – with a collapsed roof and debris in the kitchen. Burnt scaffolding and some plaster remain and the listing says the property presents a "blazing opportunity" – a possible reference to what might have occurred.
The sum paid is just under the median price for a three-bedroom home in St Johns Park, which currently sits at $1.04 million.
Listed by Blaz Dejanovic and Jamal Khaled of Blaze Real Estate, the property was marketed as an ideal building project in a prime location.
On an elevated, 625-square-metre block of land, agents suggest that a forever home could be built, with the potential also for a granny flat, subject to council approval.

The kitchen has mounds of debris and roof tiles on the floor. A fridge and some bar stools remain and the tips of scorched timber beams are visible.
The single-storey brick home does have a carport and a front and rear yard of about 625 square metres.
The property is located in a family-friendly area of Fairfield, 35km west of Sydney's CBD. Schools, parks and shops are in proximity.
Records show the home was previously a rental at $500 per week, as of October 2021.
