As part of the Geelong Line Upgrade, we are looking to deliver two creative commissions at Marshall Station near south Geelong. The two commissions are a sculptural work and a written word piece that will be delivered for the major station upgrade.
We are looking for creative practitioners with a connection to the Geelong area. The sculptural artwork will require an artist who is experienced in working with stone, cement, or other hard materials and ideally in creating works for the public realm. The written word piece is open to emerging to mid-career writers in any genre or form who can interpret and bring to life the area’s industrial past and heritage. Their written word piece will be imprinted throughout the station’s new forecourt.
Both artworks will reference the industrial heritage of the area. The site was once home to the Grovedale Cement Pipe Factory which played an important role in Geelong’s industrial and engineering past, with parts produced at the factory used to construct the heritage listed Barwon River Aqueduct.
Artists from underrepresented groups, such as First Nations artists, artists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as artists with lived experience of disability, are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Geelong Line Upgrade is part of the Regional Rail Revival Program which is investing in significant upgrades to every regional line across Victoria. Public artworks delivered by the project are guided by Regional Rail Revival Creative Strategy which is committed to enhancing people’s experience of journey and place by working with regional artists, communities, and Traditional Owners. A Creative Advisory Panel comprising of Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Creative Victoria, the City of Greater Geelong, Rail Projects Victoria and the Djilang Alliance has been established to select each of the artists.
