Fire and Rescue NSW crews determined that a candle left unattended on a verandah caused a fire that destroyed a home in Newcastle on Sunday.
The candle set fire to a couch after being blown over by the wind before the blaze quickly spread to the kitchen and loungeroom of the Caldwell Street home.
Smoke alarms saved the lives of the three occupants inside.
A woman, aged in her 40s, has been treated for life-threatening injuries after a stabbing in eastern Sydney's Dover Heights.
Three NSW Ambulance crews were called to the Weonga Road scene at midday.
Paramedics stabilised the woman before taking her to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition.
"This was a very traumatic scene to arrive at with a significant, life threatening stab wound," said NSW Ambulance Inspector Giles Buchanan.
"Paramedics administered IV fluids, stemmed the bleeding and provided pain relief to stabilise the patient."
"Stabbing wounds are generally confronting incidents and this patient has suffered a very serious injury."
