The Western Australia Branch of the Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) is thrilled to invite all our members to attend the Technical Event “Designing Cathodic Protection (CP) Systems – Who is Competent and why is it important?” on Wednesday, 24 August 2022 at 6 pm. We’ll be joined by John Peter Grapiglia who will be presenting on this topic.
Please note, registrations for this event close on Friday, 19th of August 2022 COB.

John is the Manager and Principal Engineer for Corrosion Control Engineering’s regional office in Perth, Western Australia. He is an active member and a past President and Chairman of the Australasian Corrosion Association (ACA) and is also a current cathodic protection lecturer for the NACE CP1 & CP2 Courses. When it comes to CP, how do we know that we are getting what we pay for in a design?
Speak to an onshore person who is involved in CP or an end user of CP services, and you are likely to hear the terms “black art”, “snake oil”, “smoke and mirrors”, or various other terms depicting the expectations and perceptions of what CP is, and how it works.
Speak to people involved in offshore, and, more often than not, CP couldn’t be any simpler.
Whilst it’s true that often onshore and offshore people don’t mix, could it be that the reason the offshore person’s perception of CP is so simple is that they draw inspiration from Lady Gaga – maybe they were “born this way” and just naturally find CP easier?
This presentation aims at discussing the differences between the various types of CP systems, the reason for the differences in attitude, and in particular (for offshore systems), the common misconceptions that end up being overlooked, ignored, or otherwise brushed aside, and how these have come about and are being actively promoted. It also examines why these simple things can’t be overlooked as they can have a significant impact on the final design. What’s more, in many cases, these result in expensive mistakes when working in an environment where expensive goes to the next level.
